3 Simple Ways To Bring Meditation Into Everyday Life

Continuing with our zen theme this week, we have three topics (and inspiration) from Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindful Meditation in Everyday Life. (Find it here – highly recommended!).

Bring More Mindfulness To Your Day

1. Stopping
Think of yourself as an eternal witness, as timeless. Just watch this moment, without trying to change it at all. What is happening? What do you feel? What do you see? What do you hear?

Try: Let go into full acceptance of the present moment, including how you are feeling and what you perceive to be happening.

2. Non-Judging
Our mind is constantly evaluating our experiences, comparing them with other experiences or holding them up against expectations and standards that we create, often out of fear. This type of thinking dominates the mind and weighs it down. It’s like carrying a suitcase full of rocks.

Try: Passing judgement expends a lot of energy. Imagine putting down the suitcase and suspending all judgement.

3. Generosity
Notice the resistance to the impulse to give, the worries about the future, the feeling you may be giving too much, or the thought that it won’t be appreciated “enough,” or that you will get exhausted from the effort.

Try: Consider the possibility that none of these are actually true, but that they are just forms of inertia, constriction, and fear-based self-protection.

Giving sands down such rough edges and helps us become more mindful of our inner wealth.

Oh, by the way
